Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Senior Data Engineer who is eager to get involved in exciting R&I projects in the fields of distributed data infrastructures and Data Spaces.

The suitable candidate will join the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) research area, and will work alongside a 15 member team of data engineers and data scientists with expertise in AI, Deep Learning and Disitrbuted Data Infrastuctures. DAI is an active player in the local and European R&I ecosystem and works in multiple verticals such as mobility,  inustry, manufacturing and cybersecurity.

The selected candidate will start out working on the development of a Data Space testbed that streamlines data preprocessing and sharing between different actors, guaranteeing the security and privacy of the data at all times. The project will include the development of multiple components that permit this new paradigm of data sharing as well as the implementation of multiple pilots and use cases with our wide-ranging network of partners from the public and private sector, at both Catalan and European level.

The candidate must have a technical background in Big Data, distributed data architectures and data analytics. The candidate will lead the design and implementation of the technical solutions in the mentioned project. They will also have the opportunity to directly communicate with our partners (client-facing) to help in the definition of the pilot use cases . Moreover, they will mentor and supervise junior team members, and experience in such a leadership position is highly valuable.

Main tasks:

  • Design the data architecture and components needed for the development of the testbed
  • Analyze and choose the most adequate tools for the implementation of the data architecture
  • Mentor and supervise junior team members, acting as a bridge between them and the project's technical leader
  • Lead the implementation of data processing and sharing workflows using state-of-the-art technologies
  • Participate in the definition and development of pilots and use cases that showcase the testebed's capabilities alongside our partners
  • Lead the writing of technical documentation and project deliverables
  • Participate in future project proposals

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements: 

  • MSc in Data Engineering, Big Data, Computer Science or similar
  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Data Architect or similar role
  • In-depth understanding of distributed data architectures, data processing workflows and Big Data architectures
  • Hands-on experience of development with Big Data processing tools such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, MQTT or similar
  • Experience in Java, Python, C/C++ or a similar high-level programming language
  • Experience with virtualization and deployment tools such as Docker, Kubernetes
  • Experience with git code management tools (Github, Gitlab, Bitbucket)
  • Experience mentoring and leading junior team members, especially data engineers and software engineers
  • Analytical mindset, able to understand technical details and choose appropriate implementation tools for the project
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken

Desired Requirements: 

  • Experience working on R&I projects, in a university or research center for example
  • Experience with the concepts and development of REST APIs (e.g. Spring Boost, Flask, FastAPI)
  • Knowledge of or experience with data analytics and visualization
  • Experience with or knowledge of data access control and security mechanisms (e.g. OAuth 2, TLS / SSL, digital certificates)
  • Experience in communicating with non-technical profiles, able to participate in the definition of project use cases in collaboration with non-technical partners
  • Knowledge of Spanish and / or Catalan
