Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Junior Data Engineer who is eager to get involved in exciting R&I projects in the fields of distributed data infrastructures and Data Spaces.

The suitable candidate will join the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) research area, and will work alongside a 15 member team of data engineers and data scientists with expertise in AI, Deep Learning and Disitrbuted Data Infrastuctures. DAI is an active player in the local and European R&I ecosystem and works in multiple verticals such as mobility, inustry, manufacturing and cybersecurity.

The selected candidate will start out working on the development of a Data Space testbed that streamlines data preprocessing and sharing between different actors, guaranteeing the security and privacy of the data at all times. The project will include the development of multiple components that permit this new paradigm of data sharing as well as the implementation of multiple pilots and use cases with our wide-ranging network of partners from the public and private sector, at both Catalan and European level.

The candidate must have completed a technical university degree in Computer Science, Big Data, Data Analytics or similar. They will work on the implementation of the testebed, participate in the design of the architecture and collaborate with other team members to come up with the most scalable and efficient solutions to the technical designs.

Main tasks:

  • Implement data processing and sharing workflows using state-of-the-art technologies
  • Work together with DAI team members in the design of the testbed architecture 
  • Participate in the development of pilots and use cases that showcase the testebed's capabilities
  • Collaborate with the Software Engineering department within i2CAT on the implementation of specific components
  • Participate in the writing of technical documentation and project deliverables

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • MSc in Data Engineering, Big Data, Computer Science, Business Intelligence or similar
  • Excellent track record in undergraduate and postgraduate studies 
  • In-depth understanding of distributed data architectures, data processing workflows and Big Data architectures
  • Experience with Big Data processing tools such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, MQTT or similar
  • Experience in Java, Python, C/C++ or a similar high-level programming language
  • Experience with git code management tools (Github, Gitlab, Bitbucket)
  • Analytical mindset, able to understand the technical details of the proposed solutions
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken

 

Desired requirements: 

  • 1 - 2 years working experience in a Data Engineering role
  • Familiarty with the concepts and development of REST APIs
  • Knowledge of or experience with data analytics and visualization
  • Knowledge of virtualization and deployment tools such as Docker, Kubernetes
  • Experience working on R&I projects, in a university or research center for example
  • Knowledge of Spanish and / or Catalan
