Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Senior Big Data Researcher with 5+ years of experience to lead the Big Data research line within the Distributed Artificial Intelligence and Data Infrastructures area. The area holds experience in distributed data infrastructures, data lakes, edge-cloud data management and data spaces.
Our team is an active player in the European research ecosystem and participates as partners or subcontractors in other R&D projects. Our area also offers professional services to relevant industry actors and SMEs.

The successful candidate will develop the following tasks:

  • Act as a technical lead in the projects related to Big Data, data infrastructures and data spaces
  • Lead the design of the technical architectures in the involved projects, taking into account European standards and existing Big Data and Data Space tools (e.g. MQTT, Spark, Flume, IDS-RAM, etc.)
  • Supervise, mentor and guide junior researchers and research engineers working on the different projects. Team management, effort estimation and leadership.
  • Participate in the definition of the Big Data research strategy of i2CAT, including strategic participation in relevant associations and initiatives
  • Liaison with and actively participate in relevant European and national associations and initiatives such as BDVA, Gaia-X, Gaia-X Spain, IDSA, etc.
  • Lead tasks and work packages in European and Catalan coordinated projects, especially projects funded under Horizon Europe
  • Travel and participate in project meetings, as well as international conferences and workshops and other relevant events
  • Prepare research project proposals for competitive calls, especially Horizon Europe and other programs funded by the European Commission

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements: 

  • PhD related to Big Data, Computer Science or other relevant fields
  • 5+ years of experience in research projects, preferably Horizon 2020 / FP7 projects
  • Proven experience in Big Data ecosystem tools: Hadoop HDFS, Spark, Hive, Cassandra, Sqoop, Flume, etc.
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role, leading technical design of Big Data and data infrastructure R+D projects
  • Experience in preparing research proposals for European and national competitive calls
  • Pro-active individual who can work with loosely defined goals
  • Creativity, curiosity and autonomy
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent English level, both written and oral

Desired Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience in Data Spaces and its different reference architectures (IDS-RAM, Gaia-X, FIWARE, etc.)
  • Experience in leading Tasks and Work Packages in Horizon 2020 / FP7 projects
  • Experience in team leadership and management, especially effort estimation and technical guidance
  • Experience in collaborating with local, national and European partners to identify new R+D opportunities
  • Successful track of papers and scientific publications in conferences and journals
  • Fluent Spanish and/or Catalan
