Job description

Networked multimedia systems and services are rapidly evolving, by incorporating technological advances regarding key factors and aspects, such as: high-quality and multi-modal immersive formats, advanced encoding and transcoding strategies, interaction features, one-to-many and many-to-many delivery paradigms, low-latency streaming, in-cloud virtualization and orchestration, support for heterogeneous network scenarios, platforms and consumption devices, ubiquity, etc. 

i2CAT (Barcelona, Spain) is opening a Senior Media & Networks Researcher position to join an experienced interdisciplinary team involved in the design, development and validation of interactive networked multimedia systems, including immersive video formats, multi-user settings and smart in-network strategies, with a key focus on real-time holographic communications, XR / volumetric video streaming and Metaverse-like services.

The candidate will be involved in cutting-edge research, innovation, development and validation tasks, with leading roles, and will collaborate hand-in-hand with experts in the media and networks domains under the umbrella of competitive national (Proyecto Generación de Conocimiento, Proyectos UNICO-5G I+D…) and international projects (Horizon Europe, European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking, SNS JU), including the collaboration with highly relevant international partners from academia and industry. 

The candidate is expected to participate in scientific dissemination, exploitation and funding attraction activities, as well as in co-supervision of highly skilled personnel. 

The main responsibilities for applicants to this position can include:

  • Design, develop, optimize, and deploy advanced communication and media streaming architectures, involving one-to-many and many-to-many configurations, different access networks and virtualized in-cloud components.
  • Design, develop, optimize, and deploy advanced pipelines for low-latency and adaptive streaming, leveraging, and even extending, the capabilities of latest streaming protocols (e.g., DASH, WebRTC, QUIC…). 
  • Design and develop in-cloud components and strategies for an efficient multi-user session management as well as media streams handling/forwarding.

Participants can additionally participate and collaborate in related tasks, including:

  • Design and development of media encoding and transcoding strategies along the Cloud Continuum
  • Design and development of interactive and low-latency Edge-assisted Remote Rendering Services for eXtended Reality (XR) services
  • Software virtualization and containerization for a dynamic orchestration of in-cloud session management, media transcoding and forwarding functions

The ideal candidate must have experience in one, or more, of the following areas:

  • Computer Networks and Telematics
  • Content Distribution Networks
  • Software Engineering
  • Streaming architectures, pipelines, protocols and strategies
  • Scalable multi-stream and/or multi-user communication / streaming services
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure, including wireless access networks, cloud services, and virtualization and orchestration
  • 5G (and beyond) network architectures
  • Media compression, including traditional and immersive media formats
  • Media synchronization

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements: 

  • BsC, MsC, and ideally PhD, degrees in Telecommunications, Telematics, Multimedia, or similar
  • Extensive experience in programming (C, C++, Python, Javascript…) and multimedia streaming frameworks (ffmpeg, GStreamer…)
  • Extensive experience in development of interactive multimedia services and applications 
  • Experience in media encoding and transcoding
  • Software virtualization, containerization and orchestration (Kubernetes, OpenStack…)
  • Cloud Computing and usage of cloud-services (Amazon Web Services, Azure…)
  • Analytical, problem-solving and Q&A skills
  • English professional proficiency
  • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills
  • Positive, make-it-happen, lead-by-example attitude
  • Keen to learn new technologies and gain new skills
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Publications in high-impact journals and conferences
