Job description

The Software Networks team is currently looking a Senior Smart Network & Services Researcher with proven experience in topics like 5G, 6G, SDN/NFV, Cloud/Edge to join our team.

The Software Networks team is dedicated to the research, development and innovation on Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Cloud/Edge technologies, in order to add value and to offer new tools and technologies to promote the adoption of new business models and the development of ICT sector. The group holds expertise in development of 5G platforms focused on Network Slice Management and Network Service Orchestration (Cloud to Edge) for enabling dynamic and rapid service provisioning over cross-domain multi-tenant SDN/NFV based ICT infrastructures.

The successful candidate will work, among others, in the projects Affordable 5G, OpenVerso and 5GMED.

The Affordable 5G project is a European project that aims at creating a 5G network that will deliver a complete, disaggregated and affordable solution covering the needs of private and enterprise networks through technical innovation that span across all parts of the 5G network including Radio Access, Edge, 5G Core and Orchestration.

The OpenVerso project is a Spanish national project has as part of its main objective to address the design of an architecture for a comprehensive 5G network, which can be evolved to 6G technologies and aimed at creating a federated ecosystem that serves as a means of transferring knowledge to the industrial fabric.

The 5G MED project is a European project that aims to demonstrate advanced Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and Future Railway Mobile Communications System services (FRMCS) along the “Figueres – Perpignan” cross-border corridor between Spain and France.

As part of his regular work the researcher is expected to:

  • Stay up to date with the cutting edge technologies.
  • Represent i2CAT at the different project meetings.
  • Define technological requirements of the projects to be developed.
  • Participate in technological developments related with the project and with other developments carried out by the department.
  • Build proofs of concept (prototypes) based on disruptive ideas and technologies
  • Participate in the drafting of technical documentation associated with the projects.
  • Generate patent ideas and results and that lead to scientific publications.

The candidate will report directly to the area director and will have the capabilities to manage and lead particular aspects within the projects to ensure their successful fulfillment. 

In addition to these tasks we expect that the candidate will also contribute to new proposal submissions in new project calls, as well as leading more junior people of the team.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established telework policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We ask that you attend the office two days per week, one to stay connected with the team and the other one to establish relations.

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency (we do not have opaque rooms). We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requeriments:

  • PhD in Telecommunications Engineering or Computer Science (or related discipline).
  • Knowledge and understanding of networking technologies (ie., TCP/IP, G/MPLS, switching, routing, SDN, etc.), Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Cloud Computing, Multi-access Edge Computing.
  • Analytical mind-set able to propose solutions to new and known problems and carry on research proactively.
  • Proven experience in developing/extending network or cloud prototypes/tools.
  • Good written, communication and presentation skills
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Availability to travel.

Desired requeriments:

  • Experience in a team leadership role in R&D projects.
  • Good publication record.
  • Experience with scientific proposal writing (e.g., H2020 proposals).
  • Professional level for Spanish and Catalan.
