TECNIOspring PLUS, ACCIÓ's fellowship programme, provides financial support to individual mobility proposals presented by experienced researchers in liaison with a host entity. Fellows are offered 2-year employment contracts in order to develop applied research projects at the host entity of their choice.

DEPARTMENT & PROJECT REVIEW:

I2CAT is looking for a post-doc researcher to work on the intersection of beyond 5G systems and new satellite constellations under the Tecniospring 2020 program.

The candidate will develop a research program investigating how to integrate 5G and beyond 5G systems into satellite systems, focusing initially in the provisioning of IoT services using LEO constellations. A 5G&LEO architecture with regenerative satellites will be considered where the base station is embedded in the satellite as a communications payload, whereas the 5G core network is deployed in the ground segment. A key challenge in this architecture is the fact that the LEO satellites may not have continuous connectivity with the ground segment, which will require to redesign the RAN-Core network split defined in 3GPP. The focus of the work will therefore focus at the 3GPP core network and system level challenges (not at the radio optimizations between sensors and LEO satellites).

The work will be carried out using open source software implementation of 3GPP components (e.g. OpenAirInterface), as well as network simulators.

The candidate will be offered a secondment by a spanish satellite operator working on 5G and satellite integration.

The candidate is expected to generate IPR ideas and academic publications, and will interact with other i2CAT researchers working on similar topics.

In addition, the following minimum requirements must be achieved:

•  The researcher must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for the submission of applications.
• Hold a doctoral degree and two additional years of full-time research experience after obtaining it; or have at least six years of full-time equivalent research experience, including the period of research training, after obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. Tecniospring INDUSTRY also welcomes experienced researchers who come after a career break. It is considered that researchers have had a career break when they were not active in research for a continuous period of at least twelve months within the eighteen months immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals.
