Senior position for 5G researcher MWI

Our Mobile Wireless Internet (MWI) research area is looking for a senior 5G R&D resource with expertise in 3GPP core network protocols.

The researcher will be involved in a project where i2CAT is collaborating with a LEO satellite operator to design a solution to support NB-IoT over LEO. The project features an innovative architecture where the NB-IoT eNB is onboarded on the LEO satellite payload, which implements a regenerative architecture. A major challenge in this architecture is that the LEO satellite may not have continuous connectivity with the ground station, which means that the NB-IoT eNB will not have continuous connectivity to the EPC.

The core of the project is to address this discontinuous connectivity between a NB-IoT eNB and a NB-IoT core, hence the focus is on the core network aspects, and not the radio protocol side. The project will start from an open source LTE EPC, which will be first augmented to support NB-IoT Release 13, and later to support discontinuous connectivity. 

The researcher will collaborate with other team members working on the same project.

As part of his regular work the researcher is expected to:

• Define algorithms and protocols applied to wireless technologies
• Generate patent ideas
• Generate results and lead scientific publications
• Make technical presentations and represent i2CAT at EU and national project meetings
• Work with network prototypes.
• Support project proposals that relate to the topics in this projects
