Institution:
ALBA is the Spanish 3-GeV synchrotron radiation facility operated by the Consortium CELLS, which is
equally funded by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Economía y Competividad) and the Catalan
Government (Generalitat de Catalunya, Departament d'Economia i Coneixement). ALBA is currently
operating 8 beamlines with external users, and is expanding its capabilities with the construction
of new beamlines. Among the beamlines in operation, BL24-CIRCE is a soft X-ray beamline dedicated to
state of the art photoelectron spectroscopy and microscopy, with two dedicated experimental
stations: PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) and Near Ambient Pressure Photoemission (NAPP).
ALBA is looking for an experimental scientist with a strong background in magnetism and
instrumentation for the PEEM branch.
Function:
The successful candidate will:
• Proactively participate on the exploitation, maintenance and upgrade of the CIRCE beamline and its
PEEM end station, together with the rest of the scientific beamline staff and the corresponding
engineers.
• Support external users in the design, performance and analysis of their experiments, taking
advantage of and expanding the capabilities of the beamline.
• Proactively search for new users and collaborators and disseminate relevant results and
performance of the ALBA-PEEM.
• Maintain the beamline and related laboratories and services, together with the technical staff.
• Develop a scientific program in nanomagnetism together with the rest of the BL scientific team.
He/she is encouraged to carry on a scientific programme using the capabilities of the beamline, and
to actively pursue collaborations with leading groups in nanomagnetism. He/she should be strongly
involved in the constant development of flexible sample environments and overall experimental
efficiency required to maintain the ALBA PEEM on the leading edge.
Qualifications:
Essential
The candidate must have a PhD degree in Physics or very related disciplines.
The candidate must also have proven experience on nanomagnetism and PEEM image analysis including a
significant record of publications in peer-review journals
Key asset:
Extensive experience (at least 3 years) on synchrotron beamline instrumentation and user service for
soft X-ray spectroscopy and/or microscopy experiments.
Other assets:
• Good skills on electronics, high-precision mechanics, optics, cryogeny and/or vacuum.
• Good interpersonal skills, adaptability to a multidisciplinary environment, sense of
responsibility and capabilities to work in a group, as well as to work independently for some
periods of time.
• The working language at ALBA is English. A good level of English both written and spoken is
therefore required.
• Sound grounds on linux and programming languages, specially Python. Experience on controls systems
is also valuable.
