Job description

i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Junior Researcher to join its Media Technologies Area (MediaTeach The candidate will contribute to two high-impact applied research projects focused on the future of Virtual and Extended Reality (VR/XR) and advanced video production technologies.

You will be part of MediaTeach, the Media Technologies Area at i2CAT, comprised of over 18 experienced researchers and engineers. The team focuses on distributed and interactive multimedia systems and media processing, contributing to both European and national R&D projects. MediaTeach works closely with academia and industry to develop innovative technologies that shape the future of media.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the execution of cutting-edge research and development projects within the Media Technologies Area. Their responsibilities and tasks will evolve over time, with growing ownership and impact across project activities.

Responsibilities: Ensure that technical tasks related to assigned projects are completed efficiently and within agreed timelines.

  • Project demonstration and validation: Prepare and deliver technical demos to internal stakeholders and external partners, showcasing project milestones and results.
  • Documentation and reporting: Produce high-quality documentation, including technical deliverables and reports, to meet project and client requirements.

Tasks: Develop software modules and tools related to VR/XR remote rendering and multi-camera synchronization, using technologies such as JavaScript, Node.js, Python, and FFmpeg.

  • Collaborate with the team to integrate individual components into complete systems for internal testing and public demonstrations.
  • Set up and execute test scenarios, validate functionality, and refine system performance based on feedback.
  • Prepare and maintain project deliverables such as user manuals, technical reports, and code documentation.
  • Support the team in writing scientific publications based on the outcomes of the research work.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

We are seeking a Junior-level researcher with hands-on experience in:

  • Interactive VR360 video
  • Remote rendering techniques for VR
  • Multi-camera and multi-device VR360 systems
  • Social and interactive VR360 viewing
    The ideal candidate will have a solid background in JavaScript, Node.js, WebSockets, Python, and FFmpeg, along with a strong interest in developing real-world applications that enhance immersive and collaborative media experiences.
