Job description

The i2cat Foundation is looking for an experienced and visionary IoT Research and Innovation Line Manager to lead our research and innovation initiatives in the field of Internet of Things (IoT). This is a strategic role that offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies and applied solutions with a strong potential for market impact. The selected candidate will be expected to guide a small team of researchers, drive new project ideas, and take an active role in both national and European research proposals.

The team is currently exploring and running innovation projects in several key areas:

  • Precise localization and positioning using IoT technologies
  • Ambient intelligence and context-aware systems
  • Optimization of IoT communication technologies and protocols (including terrestrial and non-terrestrial LPWAN, RF, VLC, OCC)
  • Energy efficiency and sustainable IoT solutions (Ambient IoT)

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to redesign the topic and project portfolio, with particular emphasis on aligning the topics with the emerging fields of AI.

Some of the responsibilities will be...

  • Lead and conduct research on advanced IoT architectures, protocols, and devices with a focus on market transferability and the adoption of AI.
  • Design, develop, and implement IoT prototypes and demonstrators
  • Validate and evaluate IoT solutions in real-world environments
  • Coordinate technical teams and manage project tasks and deliverables
  • Collaborate closely with team members and other research groups
  • Lead the writing and submission of competitive research proposals
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation and scientific publications

More than 15 years of international research define our expertise in the fields of 5G, IoT, VR, and Immersive Technologies, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, AI, and Digital Social Innovation. Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • PhD in a field related to IoT technologies
  • Over 5 years of hands-on experience in applied or experimental research in IoT (publications will be considered)
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ and Python
  • Proficiency in Linux system administration
  • In-depth knowledge of wireless communications, especially UWB, IEEE802.15.4, and LPWAN
  • Practical experience in designing, developing, and evaluating IoT prototypes and testbeds
  • Proven track record in European IoT-related research projects, with demonstrated leadership responsibilities
  • Experience in coordinating or writing successful research proposals, including awarded projects and funding volume
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coordinate teams
  • Autonomous, proactive, and responsible working style

Nice to have:

  • Experience or knowledge of Edge-cloud continuum projects and AI applied to IoT devices
  • Familiarity with lab equipment such as power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power supplies
  • Experience with network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcpdump, sniffers)
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools (e.g., R)
  • Research stays at international institutions
  • Patents and innovation/technology transfer achievements
  • Experience in the private sector
  • Strong professional references
