Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is seeking a Junior Developer/Researcher with experience in the field of Ambient Intelligence and IoT to join the Internet of Things department.

The selected individual will work on the experimental implementation and evaluation of emerging IoT solutions and technologies aimed at enabling the acquisition of information about users and their environment, fostering a more natural and efficient interaction between them, and serving as the foundation for developing the Smart Spaces of the Future. These Smart Spaces will have applications in various domains, such as Smart Buildings/Homes, Healthcare, and Industry.

The project will provide insights into:

  • IoT sensing
  • AI applied to IoT
  • Integration of communication and sensing technologies

Some of the tasks the individual will be involved in include:

  • Prototype implementation
  • Deployment of testbeds and experimental evaluation
  • Implementation and study of models and algorithms for detecting people, actions, or gestures using low-performance microprocessors
  • Critical analysis of results and optimization proposals
  • Writing technical documents and result reports

The main responsibility of the selected candidate will be to work alongside other members of the IoT team on tasks such as:

  • Prototype implementation
  • Deployment of testbeds and experimental evaluation
  • Implementation and study of models and algorithms for detecting people, actions, or gestures using low-performance microprocessors
  • Critical analysis of results and optimization proposals
  • Writing technical documents and result reports

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or Telecommunications
  • Proven experience in the implementation/programming of IoT prototypes with platforms such as ESP32, XIAO ESP32S3, and Raspberry Pi
  • Hands-on experience with sensing and IoT technologies for detecting people or activities; knowledge of mmWave and ToF sensors is highly valued
  • Demonstrable programming skills in C and Python
  • Proven experience with databases and tools for data management/analysis/visualization (Python, Grafana, InfluxDB, etc.)
  • Proven experience in implementing AI algorithms and models on low-performance devices (TinyML)
  • Ability to work independently and progress autonomously

Nice to have:

  • Interest in pursuing a Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, or Electronics
  • Knowledge of wireless IoT communications
  • Familiarity with IoT programming IDEs
  • Basic Linux knowledge
  • Basic version control knowledge (e.g., Git)
