Job description

The Internet of Things Research Area at the i2CAT Foundation is looking for an IoT Engineer to work on innovation projects.

The selected candidate will join the IoT group to work in the implementation and development of IoT solutions and prototypes and their evaluation in real environments. The job will offer the possibility to investigate and work in emergent IoT technologies and solutions from a very applied perspective. Concretely, the candidate will collaborate with the group in current projects working in some of the following fields:

  • Enhancement of communication and energy consumption capabilities for IoT solutions.
  • Implementation of enhanced sensing solutions for Smart Cities
  • Design and implementation of precise tracking and positioning solutions based on IoT technologies such as sensor fusion, RF or Visible Light Communications.
  • Development of the future IoT smart environments and sensing solutions capable to exploit intelligence in constrained IoT devices, adapt to the needs of the scenario and improve the overall interaction with the end user.

The main tasks performed by the candidate will be:

  • Development and implementation of HW and SW/FW IoT prototypes.
  • Deployment of experimental testbeds to validate the prototypes in controlled and real conditions. 
  • Development of tools and scripts to evaluate and monitor the solutions.
  • Writing of technical documentation and project deliverables
  • Collaboration with other researchers and engineers involved in the project.

The candidate person is expected to have capability to work autonomously and proactively and to demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

The candidate has to fulfill the following minimal requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in telecommunications, electronics or IT engineering.
  • Proven applied experience of at least 1 year in R&D or professional activities in at least two of the following topics:
    • Hardware design and implementation of functional IoT prototypes
    • Firmware programming
    • IoT communication technologies and protocols
    • Linux embedded systems
    • Artificial Intelligence applied to constrained devices (e,g, TinyML)
  • Proven experience in IoT prototyping and working with IoT development platforms and programming IDEs.
  • Proven experience in C/C++ and Python programming.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Capability to work autonomously, proactively and to assume responsibilities.

The following requirements will be considered as merits:

  • Knowledge of IoT technologies and protocols (especially, UWB, WiFi HaLow, LPWAN and VLC).
  • Experience in hardware design software (Kicad, Altium, Eagle...).
  • Experience in the deployment of services and applications based on IoT sensors (e.g ToF, Lidar, cameras, microphones).
  • Experience in wireless analysis tools (wireshark, tcpdump, sniffers) and in laboratory equipment (e.g oscilloscope, power analyser..).
  • Experience in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g. R, Python, Excel, Grafana...).
  • Interest in doing a MSc or PhD on IoT topics.
  • Knowledge of Android/Iphone programming.
  • Applied knowledge of AI, NN and ML.
  • Experience in computer vision (e.g. OpenCV).
  • Previous participation in European or national R&D&I projects.
