Job description

The Space Communications (SpaceComms) Research Group is currently participating in different activities that conform to the New Space Strategy of Catalonia. This strategy aims at promoting the space ecosystem in the Catalan region and developing novel technologies that reach the market to boost private and public initiatives. Among the different activities that are planned in the strategy, the research and development ones are key to achieve the strategy goal.

As an engineer involved in the NewSpace Use Cases, you will participate in the conceptualization, design, testing and deployment of satellite ground nodes for various use cases. The satellite use cases will be focused on communications from IoT to Broadband. This role is crucial to the space communication department in order to validate all the technologies and innovation concepts being currently developed.

Some responsabilities of the candidate:

  • Be involved on the design of use cases for the space communications department.
  • Program the new functionalities of the space communications gateway to solve the different challenges of each use case.
  • Design and implement new upgrades for the satellite communication gateways.
  • Deploy and maintain the developed system around the Catalan region
  • Participate in some research activities.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
  • Understanding of telecommunications technologies, particularly as applied to satellite communications.
  • Proven capability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Good English level, both written and oral.
  • Have some good knowledge of programming languages such as C++ and python.
  • Have some experience with microcontrollers such as Arduinos or ESP32.
  • Knowledge of electronics and debug tools of a laboratory.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in CubeSat projects, especially in telecommunications payloads.
  • Experience on the design of PCBs.
  • Experience on the deployment of hardware in rural areas.
  • Ability to work flexibly and manage various project elements efficiently.
  • Driving license
