The Space Communications (SpaceComms) Research Group is investigating different research lines related to Internet of Things (IoT) satellite communications and Inter-Satellite Link (ISL) interactions. In particular, the development of new communication protocols for satellite networks that provide IoT coverage has become one of the main research topics of the group.
This development can be conducted using tools that enable us to evaluate novel solutions. One of those tools is a simulation engine that is able to simulate both satellite dynamics and satellite communications. The research group is working on the development of a simulation engine with these features. The candidate will be responsible to maintain the current version of the engine, and extend it with new functionalities.
Additionally, the research group is also working on a Non-Terrestrial Network testbed that enables them to evaluate and develop novel technologies. The candidate shall define this testbed, and the different components, as well as install them and develop supporting software to facilitate its usage.
The selected candidate will contribute to develop novel features of the Distributed Satellite Systems Simulator (DSS-SIM). This Simulation engine is an asset of the SpaceComms area, and it is necessary to keep developing novel features, like satellite pointing, LENA stack integration, QKDSim integration, optical modelling, among others.
As a summary, the tasks associated to this job positions are the following ones:
(1) Understand the current design of the simulation engine
(2) Develop new capabilities in this simulation engine
(3) Maintain the repository of the simulation engine
(4) Contribute in the setup of the NTN testbed
(5) Maintain the NTN testbed and propose novel features
