Positions open for Fetal medicine research fellows to join a research line based on the development of an experimental model of artificial placenta.

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a research line on fetal surgery involving the development of an artificial placenta experimental setting. Research activities involve animal experimentation. We are mainly looking for (1) junior physicians from related specialties (i.e. mainly Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Neonatology-Intensive Pediatric support or Cardiology, but other medical/surgical fields may be considered) with interest in a competitive research fellowship; (2) professionals from other fields (i.e. biomed, veterinarian …) with experience in experimental surgery particularly involving pregnancy.

Context
BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, with a consolidated track record in fetal medicine and surgery research and a long-standing experience in large multidisciplinary projects.

BCNatal-FMRC is the research center of BCNatal, a large clinical centre integrating the Departments of Maternal-fetal Medicine and Neonatology from two large tertiary University Hospitals, the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona. The research and clinical center provide a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

Main purpose of the job
•To participate as key member in the development and research activities of an experimental model of artificial placenta. Responsibilities include support and monitoring of lamb fetuses including hemodynamics, cardiac function and well-being,
and for some positions the development of a personal research project. Exposure to clinical fetal medicine and surgery activities within BCNatal will be contemplated when the experimental research schedules allow for it.

Main duties and responsibilities
• Involvement in the definition of protocols for fetal support and monitoring, from general fetal well-being to specific developing organs (heart, lungs and brain).
• Involvement in the tasks of fetal support and monitoring.
• Participation in the development and refinement of experimental procedures as part of the surgical team.
• Perform literature searches and stay updated with the state of the art.
• Develop documentation including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Biological sample extraction, collection and processing.
• Fetal monitoring data collection and integration in the DB system.
• Maintain accurate records and document the actions taken.
• Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information.
• Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research.
• Contribution to the publication of research results in national and international journals (for those with an interest in research outputs and PhD theses).
• Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Requirements

Key Profile Requirements:

The successful candidate should be educated to a degree in Medicine or equivalent.
Experience in experimental research/surgery will be an asset but not mandatory depending on the other skills and type of position. Candidates with a PhD degree can be considered but it is not a requirement.
