Job description

Position: Expert in Cardiovascular research with experience in extracorporeal circulation systems.

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a research project to develop an artificial placenta, which involves animal experimentation. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work as a senior researcher-expert in the extracorporeal circulation system and cardiovascular research involved in this project.

Context

BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, directed by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a multidisciplinary research centre in fetal and perinatal medicine, with a consolidated track record in fetal medicine and surgery research and a long-standing experience in large multidisciplinary projects.
BCNatal-FMRC is the research center of BCNatal, a large clinical centre integrating the Departments of Maternal-fetal Medicine and Neonatology from two large tertiary University Hospitals, the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona. The research and clinical center provide a privileged environment for clinically applicable and translational research.

Duration: Initial term of one year, renewable thereafter for further fixed-term periods until the end of the project (3 to 7-year project). There is a 6-month probationary period.

Main purpose of the job
Lead on the maintenance and further refinement of the extracorporeal circulation system of the artificial placenta in lamb fetuses and neonates

Main duties and responsibilities
• Work in close collaboration within a larger team with the main aim of refining the extracorporeal circulation system for an optimal fetal hemodynamic support
• Develop and supervise projects involving cardiovascular function and development of fetuses and neonates (i.e. hemodynamics, arteriovenous circuit blood flow, cardiac function, cardiac histological analysis)

Other Tasks

Develop documentation including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Biological sample extraction, collection and processing
• Participation in the animal experimentation procedures
• Contribution to the publication of research results in national and international journals
• Presentation of research results at national and international conferences
• Maintain accurate records and document actions taken
• Ensure prompt and efficient response to queries (daily trouble shooting), acknowledging all communication, and ensuring efficient flow of information.
• Comply with the 4Rs (reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery) and ethics involving animals in research
• Perform other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job description as requested by the Project Manager, Principal Investigator, Scientific Manager or the Chief Investigator. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post, and as duties and responsibilities change/develop, the job description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the
post holder. The appointee will be expected to carry out any dditional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Requirements

Key Profile Requirements:
The successful candidate should be educated to a degree/master/PhD in Medicine, Biomedicine or equivalent with experience as a researcher in experimental cardiovascular
models. Experience working with large animals and Langendorff heart set-up in cardiovascular research is desirable.
They should have good organizational and time management skills. They should also have the ability to organize and prioritize a varied and demanding workload.
