Job description

Institution:

The consortium for Construction, Equipment and Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory
(CELLS) is jointly funded by the Spanish Government through its Ministerio de Economía y
Competitividad (Ministry of Economy and competitiveness) and the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan
Autonomous Government) through its Departament d’Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació
(Department of Universities, Research and Information Society).

The accelerator was commissioned in 2011 and the Beamlines started official operations in May 2012.
The installation operates 24/6, about 6000 hours a year. The control systems for the accelerators
complex and all beamlines use common tools and reuse most hardware and software. However every
beamline and laboratory requires particular developments for fast data acquisition and on-line data analysis.

The controls software section consists of 16 staff members. The section is part of the computing and
controls division with 50 staff members.

Function:

- Provide support for several services related to the control systems of the Accelerators and
Beamlines during operation, with a particular focus on the continuous service improvement of standard
procedures applied to BL16-NOTOS.
- Participate in the maintenance of the control systems, with a particular attention to equipment
protection systems and personnel safety systems during the specific periods.
- Develop PLC-based solutions for the control, equipment protection, and personnel safety systems for
BL16-NOTOS, applied to other Beamlines as well BL Beamlines and particle accelerators at ALBA.
- Participate in the development, documentation, integration and support of the ALBA PLC systems,
including sensor readouts, mechanical actuators, and interlock mechanisms.
- Take part of a scrum team in protection systems development projects.

Requirements

Qualifications:

- Industrial engineer, software engineer, telecommunications engineer, physicist or equivalent.
- Experience in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). Some experience in Programming in one of the
different PLC environment in the market (Siemens S7, B&R, Beckhoff, for example).
- Experience in the field of Interlock systems, Personnel Safety systems, Equipment protection systems,
and Industrial Automation.
- Proven programming skills in any of C, C++, Python, or Java.
- Experience in Packaging, Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery would be considered an asset.
- Experience in Tango, Sardana, Scrum, Prince2 and Beamline control would be considered an asset.
- Good interpersonal skills and capabilities to work in a group, as well as to work independently
for some tasks.
- The working language at ALBA is English. A good level of English both written and spoken is required.
