i2CAT is a mission-oriented research center on advanced digital technologies that applies its knowledge to meet real industry and society challenges. i2CAT has a leading position in the research and development of digital advanced technologies within the European R&D ecosystem, specifically in the areas of: 5G/6G and Internet of Things, Virtual & Immersive Technologies, Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Blockchain.

In order to support its research and innovation activities, i2CAT has an experimental 5G/6G infrastructure distributed through the city of Barcelona, but also with points of presence in other parts of Catalonia. Such infrastructure is an heterogeneous platform that enables network, Edge,  Cloud and Next Generation Applications experimental activities; with a wide range of resources that need to be orchestrated and composed into isolated experimentation environments that fulfil the requirements of the different research projects and innovation activities that use them.

The Operations Area of i2CAT is seeking a Research Systems / Testbeds Engineer for its 5G/6G Experimental infrastructure to work on the design, deployment, automation and maintenance of i2CAT's infrastructure supporting the R + I + D activities.

As part of his/her regular work the candidate is expected to:

  • Get a deep understanding of i2CAT's 5G/6G experimental infrastructure, providing and maintaining a roadmap for its evolution based on i2CAT's current and future needs
  • Work with i2CAT's researchers to understand their requirements in terms of testbeds to support their research and innovation activities
  • Design, deploy and operate the testbeds required by the different research projects and innovation activities with private companies, in collaboration with i2CAT's Digital Infrastructure Services area
  • Establish and maintain procedures to document, monitor and optimize the use of i2CAT's experimental infrastructure, in conjunction with the Operations Director

The candidate will report directly to the Operations director and will have the capabilities to manage and lead particular technical aspects within i2CAT's experimental infrastructure design, deployment and maintenance to ensure its successful operation.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established telework policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We ask that you attend the office two days per week, one to stay connected with the team and the other one to establish relations.

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency (we do not have opaque rooms). We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Experience in enterprise / campus networking (routing and switching).
  • Experience in Linux systems administration.
  • Experience in computer virtualization technologies.
  • Experience in leading experimental testbed design, deployment, operation & maintenance.
  • Analytical mind-set able to propose solutions to new and known problems 
  • Ability to understand and balance the requirements of multiple researchers
  • Good written, communication and presentation skills. Good spoken and written English.

Desired Requirements: 

  • Sound knowledge and in-depth understanding of Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Cloud Computing and Cloud Native architectures and concepts.
  • Proven hands-on experience in deploying, operating and maintaining private Clouds based on OpenStack.
  • Experience with  LTE, NR and IoT cellular systems.
  • Experience with the Atlassian software suite; in particular Jira for service management and Confluence for documentation.
