Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Researcher to join a project in the scope of mobile edge computing (MEC)-enabled V2X communications, in collaboration with the Software Networks (SN) and the Mobile and Wireless Internet (MWI) groups at i2CAT.

The successful candidate will participate in research tasks including simulations and demonstrations of V2X and 5G related concepts, development of vehicular applications, design of MEC solutions, etc.

In particular, the main tasks and responsibilities of the Researcher will be:

  • Define technological requirements of the projects and test bed infrastructure to be developed.
  • Prepare and carry out experiments related to the project.
  • Generate ideas and results leading to scientific publications.
  • Participate in the drafting of technical documentation associated with the project.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Requirements

Minimum requeriments:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications/electrical engineering, computer science or related discipline, with at least 1-2 years’ experience, or Master’s degree in the same field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of networking technologies (i.e., TCP/IP, switching, routing, etc.), Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Cloud Computing, and edge computing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of 5G networks.
  • Knowledge of V2X communications principles, IEEE 802.11p and C-V2X will be positively valued.
  • Hands-on experience with the setting up of test equipment, carrying out experiments and measurements, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, Kubernetes and networking troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) techniques and algorithms and their application to 5G/6G networks.
  • Analytical mind-set able to propose solutions to new and known problems and carry on research proactively.
  • Previous experience with computer programming in Python, shell scripting, C++ or Java.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Desired requeriments:

  • Interest in pursuing a PhD in communications/electrical engineering, computer science or related discipline.
  • Proven hands-on experience in developing/extending network or cloud prototypes/tools/platforms (OpenStack, Ansible, AWS, Azure, DevOps tools, etc.).
  • Knowledge of research trends in vehicular communications.
  • Knowledge in simulation tools for vehicular communications, e.g., Omnet++, SUMO, ns-3, and CARLA.
  • Scientific publications in high ranking conferences and journals.
  • Experience in leading experimental testbed design, deployment, operation & maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the CCAM research ecosystem in Europe and Spain.
  • Good written and spoken level of Spanish.
