Job description

The Software Networks team is currently looking a Senior 5G/6G Network Researcher with proven experience in topics like 5G, 6G, SDN/NFV, Cloud/Edge to join our team.

The Software Networks team is dedicated to the research, development and innovation on Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Cloud/Edge technologies, in order to add value and to offer new tools and technologies to promote the adoption of new business models and the development of ICT sector. The group holds expertise in development of 5G platforms focused on Network Slice Management and Network Service Orchestration (Cloud to Edge) for enabling dynamic and rapid service provisioning over cross-domain multi-tenant SDN/NFV based ICT infrastructures.

The successful candidate will work, among others, in the 5GaaS & UNICO5G/6GENABLERS projects.

The 5GaaS project is a European project originated from an FTI (Fast Track to Innovation) project developed under the Horizon 2020 Programme aiming to create and launch a new product in the form of a decentralised marketplace for the telecom ecosystem. 5GaaS proposes a new way for the stakeholders of the telco space to conduct business, via pre-designed agreements or contracts and an automated billing system. This is possible due to the programmability of smart contracts, which are stored in a Distributed Ledger and grant certainty regarding the transaction outcomes to provider and consumer. https://5gaas.eu/

The UNICO5G/6GENABLERS project analyse, define and implement methods to provide a network design that natively considers AI principles from the requirements phase to reach ultra automation and optimised network management. The main focus of the project will be on constant and adaptive learning mechanisms leveraging high precision smart telemetry to enable the seamless management and optimisation of an extremely distributed resource set (i.e., radio and computational resources), from vertical devices to cloud sites. As a result, this project will enable zero-touch autonomous management, coordination and optimisation of resources in the edge/cloud continuum without human intervention.

Reporting to the area director, the successful candidate is expected to:

  • Stay up to date with the cutting edge technologies.
  • Lead and coordinate the technical work from i2CAT in the project
  • Define technological requirements of the projects to be developed.
  • Act as the project technical manager coordinating the technical inputs of other partners
  • Participate in technological developments related with the project and with other developments carried out by the department.
  • Build proofs of concept (prototypes) based on disruptive ideas and technologies
  • Participate in the drafting of technical documentation associated with the projects.
  • Generate patent ideas and results and that lead to scientific publications.
  • Lead preparation of Horizon Europe proposals related to SN topics
  • Coordinate the work of interns and junior team members
