Job description

The i2CAT Foundation is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Innovation to join our leadership team. As part of our recent organizational restructure, we have created a dedicated Innovation area that reports directly to the Director of i2CAT. This new role will be pivotal in shaping the future of innovation within our organization.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategic Management:
    • Lead the Innovation area, working closely with the internal strategic committee, which includes eight other directors.
    • Manage three key areas within i2CAT, ensuring strategic coordination among the Heads of Innovation across the different research areas: Distributed AI, Mobile Wireless Internet, Software Networks, Media Technologies, SpaceComm, DST, Cybersecurity and IoT.
    • Define and track global innovation indicators and ensure the achievement of annual Innovation KPIs, aligning with i2CAT’s 2024-2027 strategic plan.
  • Direct Reports:
    • Knowledge and Technology Marketing (KTM) Director:
      • Oversee valorization, IP protection, tech transfer, and marketing strategies for i2CAT’s assets and verticals.
    • Research and Innovation Policy and Strategy in Europe (RISE) Director:
      • Guide European and national strategies for competitive funding.
    • Software Engineering Group (SEG) Director:
      • Lead software development and engineering efforts to support research areas and key projects with high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL).
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
    • Work closely with the Directors of Innovation and Business, Public Sector Innovation, R&D, and Technology.
    • Drive social-digital innovation principles from the Digital and Social Technologies area (DST) into i2CAT’s innovation activities and enhance i2CAT’s participation in EC competitive programs focused on citizen-centered approaches.
  • Project and Team Management:
    • Establish and oversee various innovation teams for technological projects in both private and public sectors.
    • Ensure successful project delivery.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Validate and monitor annual KPIs for RISE, KTM, and SEG.
  • Strengthen alignment between Innovation & Business Strategy and Marketing Strategy teams.
  • Foster the integration of SEG members into various project teams.
  • Maximize the impact of i2CAT’s internal assets.
  • Validate and oversee national and EC strategies for i2CAT’s involvement in competitive programs to strength i2CAT’s global positioning.
  • Foster the professionalization of the SEG team.

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office one day per week to stay connected with your team and to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where everything is light and transparency. We have a variety of workspaces so that you don't have to be at the same table all day.

Requirements

Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Degree in Engineering (Telcom or computer science) and executives’ studies in business leadership
  • Proven experience (more than 15 years) in a similar leadership role within an innovation-focused organization in the IT and Telecom industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of expertise of i2CAT’s R&D&I teams.
  • Experience on supervising financial planning with executive business education.
  • Strong strategic thinking, leadership and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities with experience managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Deep understanding of the innovation landscape and competitive funding mechanisms.
  • Experience on identifying Innovation and business opportunities
  • Experience managing R&D and software development teams and projects.
  • Experience on elaborating business cases and business plans for new technology.
  • Demonstrated experience in National and EC R&D&I programs
  • Spanish, Catalan and English are a must.
