Job description

Our Mobile Wireless Internet (MWI) research area is looking for an engineer in the field of IoT, Electronics, Telecommunications who is willing to get involved in different IoT projects.

The successful candidate will be working in one or more of the following projects:

  • Localization and positioning solutions based in IoT Technologies.

The candidate will work on the implementation and development of some of localization and positioning solutions based in UWB technologies which i2cat is developing and applying in various R&D projects. One of the lines of action is the investigation of hybrid solutions that, based on all the available information (inertial sensors, GPS, UWB or other radios), allow to improve the positioning and tracking of vehicles or devices in motion. These technologies could help improve autonomous vehicle guidance or the safety of roadworthy items (for example, bicycles or scooters). On the other hand, we want to investigate how to apply this technology to improve the location of emergency and security personnel (for example, firefighters) in field activities.

  • IoT technologies applicable to home environments.

Support to the evaluation of wireless technologies applicable to home environments (including, but not limited to, home automation, energy consumption control, remote consumption management and preventive maintenance of equipment). The work to be done requires Firmware study and implementation to achieve a basic prototype based on the new Bluetooth Mesh specification, analysis of the capabilities of this technology and comparison with other radio alternatives (for example, WiFi, Zigbee or Bluetooth).

  • Tracking and positioning in indoors using BLE

Support to the study and evaluation of localization solutions based on Bluetooth Low Energy. FW study and implementation to achieve a basic prototype to validate and compare localization options via Bluetooth. Analysis of the improvement of solutions based on Arrival Angle and Departure Angle (AOA and AOD) and their feasibility for application in indoor tracking and positioning solutions compared to other existing radio alternatives (e.g. UWB).

The successful candidate is expected to work autonomously and will gradually assume responsibilities in some of the project work packages to be executed.

The researcher will be part of the Mobile and Wireless Internet (MWI) group at i2CAT. More information can be found here: https://www.i2cat.net/research-topics/mobile-wireless-internet/
