About the School of Architecture

The UIC Barcelona School of Architecture was the first private architecture school in Barcelona and after 20 years is now a role model in terms of quality university teaching in this discipline.

The aim of the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture is to train architects with a clear international vocation, a critical spirit, creative skills, knowledge of both current and new technologies, people who are involved in society and are prepared to face the challenges of the future.

What we are looking for

The School of Architecture has several teaching and research positions available. We are looking for lecturers/professors at different stages of their academic careers who would like to join us to take on research, teaching or management tasks.

The candidate will play an active role in the development of interdisciplinary research projects leading to the expansion of collaborations and partnerships with other universities, the profession and the industry, both nationally and internationally.

The candidate’s responsibilities to achieve a successful academic trajectory will include teaching, research and providing a service. It will be essential for them to contribute to the School's curricular development, coordination, student mentoring and advising. The candidate should know and support the University’s mission statement.

We offer

  • A four-year tenure-track position with an intermediate evaluation (depending on the applicant’s background, the position could become permanent more quickly).
  • A part-time contract, a good and dynamic working environment, flexible working hours and support for research.
  • Depending on the candidate’s experience, we offer a research starting pack and a relocation pack.
  • A highly competitive salary based on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.
  • The position will be located at UIC Barcelona, in the School of Architecture
  • Start date: to be negotiated with the candidate. The desired start date would be as close as possible to 1 September 2020.

Selection process

In May 2018, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya received recognition from EURAXESS via an HR Excellence in Research Award that ensures that the selection of candidates is carried out only based on criteria for excellence. The UIC Barcelona selection process includes:

  • An independent committee of experts who evaluate applications and decide who will move on to the next stage. All the committee members are from outside UIC-Barcelona.
  • A public oral defence by finalists: presentation of their trajectory (both academic and teaching) and their research project/s. Following this presentation, the examining panel will ask a number of questions to conclude the defence. The defence will take 60 minutes in total.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Architecture and first professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch or international equivalent).
  • Evidence of specialised teaching.
  • English language accreditation to a minimum level of C1 or similar.

Assessment criteria

The following aspects of the applicant’s CV will be taken into consideration:

  • A strong track record in research in any field of architecture: evidence of an internationally recognised research track record, including experience in interdisciplinary programmes.
  • A proven distinctive design practice research record and the ability to undertake research leadership to enhance the standing of the School both nationally and internationally.

Other criteria include

  • The potential to apply for and be awarded funding projects through effective liaison with industry and other research disciplines and the ability to attract external funding and experience through grant bodies.
  • Evidence of ability and experience in mentoring candidates engaged in design practice research.
  • A focus on how Artificial Intelligence and Architecture cross paths to implement new technologies for up to date design research and graphic expression knowledge.
  • Experience of academic management.
  • Experience of degree-level teaching (it will be highly favourable if the candidate has teaching experience at a master’s or postgraduate level).
  • Advanced knowledge of innovative teaching methodologies.
  • Professional experience.
  • A high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult, network and build relationships within the organisation and outside it.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience in leading and managing projects to deliver strategic objectives.
  • In the case of non-Spanish candidates, knowledge of Catalan and/or Spanish will be of value.
